When members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and leading representatives of early music founded the Berliner Barock Solisten in 1995, the idea was to combine historically informed performance practice with modern instruments. The foundation of the ensemble was an innovative project, because at that time, as violinist Raimar Orlovsky recalls, “there was no focus at all on early music in our orchestra”. But in Rainer Kussmaul, the Berliner Philharmoniker had a first concertmaster who inspired his colleagues with his keen interest in Baroque music. The members of the ensemble also made the conscious decision to play 17th- and 18th-century compositions on modern instruments. This allowed them to develop their own distinctive sound, which has since become their trademark. Following Rainer Kussmaul’s retirement in 2012, the Berliner Barock Solisten appointed several individuals to the role of artistic director, including Bernhard Forck, Daniel Hope and Frank Peter Zimmermann. Since 2018, the ensemble has been under the direction of Reinhard Goebel.
