Black Meteoric Star is the uncompromising noisy electro alias of producer and artist Gavilán Rayna Russom. Born of her childhood steeped in the sounds of freestyle, rap, electro and synth driven funk during the breakdance era of the late 70’s and early 80’s, and her experiences as a teen producing acid house, techno, and hip hop while simultaneously playing in punk and hardcore bands, Rayna’s productions as Black Meteoric Star picked up the torch from her mid 90’s recordings as Paper Eyes that combined these influences with inspiration from late-night radio mixes, experimental raves, and underground clubs. Black Meteoric Star has released music on labels including Nation, DFA, Voluminous Arts, and Modern Obscure Music. These releases have ranged from hard and distorted acid-techno burners, to moody coldwave and sassy electro songs, to experimental freak electronic workouts-always with a central core of noisy distorted synths, sexy EBM bass lines, and jacking electro drumbeats. Black Meteoric Star’s productions have received significant critical acclaim from outlets including Pitchfork, The Quietus, Resident Advisor, and XLR8R. 2020’s triple LP DISCO featured album closer Freaks Only, an anthem for the real ones that has already become a cult classic. In September 2026 Black Meteoric Star will release WET, the sixth studio album from the project, via Ransom Note Records and Dark Entries. WET celebrates the shared histories of dance floors and queer SM/Leather dungeons.
