For almost forty years, the Gramophone Award-winning ensemble Cappella Pratensis has performed Renaissance polyphony directly from historical notation, singing from a single large choirbook rather than from modern scores. Under the leadership of Tim Braithwaite, the ensemble has gone further into the traditions surrounding this repertoire, exploring historical improvisation and pedagogy, and working within the contexts of liturgical reconstruction. The result is an immersive approach, in which the singers draw on a truly embodied relationship with past musical cultures. The ensemble performs throughout Europe, North and South America and Japan, at festivals including Boston, Berkeley, Utrecht and York. Its recordings have received the Diapason d'Or, the Prix Choc and three consecutive Gramophone Editor's Choice mentions, the REMA Heritage Project of the Year Award in 2022, the Premio Abbiati for Obrecht's Missa Maria zart, and a Gramophone Classical Music Award in 2024. Rex regum: An imperial Christmas, released on 2 October 2026, completes the five-volume Den Bosch Choirbooks series.
