When the band she’d fronted since 2017 fractured, Catrin Vincent turned to a friendly Dorffman piano found for cheap on Gumtree, writing piano capsules inspired by Molly Drake, mother to Nick, whose crackly solo ditties only saw the light of day posthumously. Vincent drew pictures of rivers and trees and pinned them above the piano, nicknamed Dorma, creating her own window to the world. She wanted to return to how she felt when she started writing music, so she dusted off an analogue drum machine, bought herself a Star Wars-y synth, and interpolated recordings of birdsong, rushing water, and the church choir that would rehearse above her creepy crypt studio. The resulting Free re-underlines how completely peerless her voice is, and comprises breathstealing studies in piano, voice, and gentle, ambient arranging. Vincent self-produced the entire thing and treated it like the last album she’d ever make.
