An underground math rock act.
Codices have carved out an unusual sound for themselves; not quite math rock, not quite post rock, with big chaotic riffs and careful deliberations in equal measure. The closest bands you could compare them to would be And So I Watch You From Afar, Brontide, The Physics House Band and Russian Circles. They have performed at the likes of ArcTanGent, Portals, Weird and Wonderful, Upgefukt and Little Cavalier festivals, as well as embarking on two UK tours and supporting the likes of Totorro, The Fierce and the Dead, Hikes and Body Hound. In 2020, the band went into the studio to record their debut album, produced by Tom Morley (Delta Sleep, Olympians, Suffer Like G Did) which is due for release in October 2021. Filled with unease and triumph in equal measure, the record, titled "Vivid", meshes light and darkness with ferocity and precision, flickering in and out of consciousness like a fever dream. Speaking of the record, guitarist Sam Festenstein comments: "This album is simply the combination of what all of us want to listen to. We wrote it all together so all four of us have equal say. No record label pressure. No pretence. No care for what anyone else wants to hear. It's the sum of four very opinionated music lovers, with different but slightly overlapping tastes, spending three years in a practice room arguing about what would sound best". "Vivid" is available to pre-order via Beth Shalom Records at codices.bandcamp.com
