Dan Croll’s recent releases have chronicled his move from the UK to the U.S. (2020’s Grand Plan, explored the challenges of being away from home and foreshadowed his return (2023’s Fools), and now with the new single “California,” looks in the rear view mirror as that move is complete. Written in the departures bar at LAX just before leaving for the UK, “California” captures the instinct to hold back emotionally and the clarity that can come with distance. The song reflects on saying goodbye to a relationship with an expiration date set from the start, and on the lasting weight of small gestures left undone. A line adapted from a letter received that day became its emotional centre, reframing the experience less as heartbreak and more as perspective gained in hindsight. Built around the piano, the track moves between swaying, Bacharach-inspired verses, and a more direct, big-band-inspired chorus that mirrors the push and pull of regret. Self-produced in a small East London studio, its arrangement gradually expands from upright piano into vibraphone, layered strings, flugelhorn and reverberant unison backing vocals, creating a widening emotional scale.
