An underground, nostalgic progressive rock act.
Kekik was a rock band formed in Istanbul by Enis Gümüş, Tolga Özüdoğru, Bora Okumuşoğlu, and Cem Karaoğuz in February 2002. Although the band was founded while they were in university, the guitarists Enis and Tolga were playing some similar music back in high school. The band had no name for over a year, until they realized that they needed one, since they were going to play at the Istanbul Technical University Rock Festival. A few days before that concert, they decided to name the band “Kekik”, which means "thyme" in Turkish. Kekik mostly played their own compositions as well as some folk tunes. They did not care about any genre specific labels, however, their music had influences from punk, rock, metal and folk music. The band liked to improvise very often, and most of their songs never sounded the same twice. Just before the band split due to education and work-related expatriation, Kekik was concentrated more improvisational songs that could be labeled as post-rock. Kekik recorded seven of their songs in 2005. They made a demo album with these recordings, but they didn't release it. Finally, it is being released in 2020.
