An underground jazz fusion act.
KIW is defined as an e-jazz trio, a genre that blends jazz, funk, and hip-hop with electronic music. KIW consists of Pau Jorba (sax, Ableton and fx.), Artur Ponsà (drums and electronics), and Ferran Rico (bass, synths and fx.) respectively—three musicians initially trained in Barcelona and now continuing their studies in the United States at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and the New School in NYC. The trio had always wanted to break away from conventional jazz and electronic music was the way to do it. Inspired by Triphasic, the jazz trio led by Llibert Fortuny, Gary Willis, and David Gómez, they knew from the very beginning that they wanted the fourth member of the band to be a computer. That gives them the power to move between the richness and essence of improvised music, and bringing visuals and video projections in their live performances, projecting animated artwork designed for their tracks—making their live shows a much more impactful experience. “We want to break the idea of the artist on stage and their distant relationship with the audience. We much prefer the idea of inviting someone to have an experience with us, a more holistic process, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, creating community.” Follow us on Instagram @kiw.trio !
KIW plays e-jazz, a contemporary genre blending traditional jazz improvisation, funk, hip-hop, and electronic beat production.
The trio originally formed in Barcelona, Spain, with members currently studying and performing across Boston and New York City.
