Mên An Tol
Formed in the orbit of a South London pub, the spirit of Mên An Tol’s music can can be traced back to frontman Bill Jefferson’s own musical education in his native Cornwall where he’d play folk sessions in and around the local pubs - in-fact the band name itself is taken from a rural site of ancient stones. The band’s latest EP ‘This Land’ continues the trend of folk inflected anthems that brought them acclaim for their debut EP ‘The Country’, only this time with a deeper, more polished and melodic edge. Whilst earlier tracks like ‘NW1’ and ‘Set In Stone’ evoked the raw grit of The Pogues and The Waterboys, ‘This Land’ brings into play some of the band’s other influences - The La’s, The Cranberries, Damien Dempsey. Lead single ‘Not Ideal’, produced by Fontaines DC’s Carlos O’Connell, is a chiming epic. Layers of acoustic guitars and mandolin build to a life-affirming chorus that yearns to be sung along to.
