A nostalgic power pop artist.
Nick Heyward has spent more than four decades writing melodic, distinctive pop — with Haircut 100 and through an ongoing solo career, both continuing to evolve today. Nick first came to attention with Haircut 100 in 1981. Their platinum-selling debut album Pelican West mixed pop, funk, jazz and jangly guitars in a way that sounded completely their own, and produced four UK Top 10 singles: “Favourite Shirts”, “Love Plus One”, “Fantastic Day” and “Nobody’s Fool”. Going solo in 1983, Nick recorded North of a Miracle with Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick. It built on the musicality of Pelican West, but with a grander palette of strings, brass and expansive arrangements. Singles “Whistle Down the Wind” and “Blue Hat for a Blue Day” both reached the UK Top 10. Postcards From Home and I Love You Avenue followed through the rest of the ’80s. Then came From Monday to Sunday in 1993 and an unexpected new audience in America, where “Kite” reached No. 4 on Billboard’s Alternative chart. Tangled followed, and then The Apple Bed for Creation Records in 1997. The years since have seen Nick continue to write, record and perform, while both his solo work and Haircut 100 have found renewed attention. In 2026, Haircut 100 released Boxing the Compass, while Nick’s autobiography Fantastic Days and the collection The Essential Nick Heyward bring together different parts of a career that has always been driven by songs.
