Shanks & Bigfoot are Stephen Meade and Danny Langsman, the same two producers behind Doolally, on two labels in parallel. Rejected by Locked On as a second Doolally single, Sweet Like Chocolate went out as a limited 1000 copy run on brown vinyl. Heavy pirate rotation made it a Kiss FM priority track, and it entered the Independent Chart four months before any major label release, from underground sales alone. Breakfast host Steve Jackson rallied his listeners to support the record. A bidding war followed and it landed at Jive/Zomba for May 1999. It entered the UK Singles Chart at number one and stayed two weeks, the first UK garage record to top the chart and the first ever to top the singles, dance, R&B and independent charts simultaneously. Platinum within a fortnight, and five weeks at the top of the R&B chart. The eighth best selling UK single of 1999 and Radio One’s most played record over an eight week run. The MOBO Award for Best Dance Act followed, beating Fatboy Slim and Armand Van Helden. Two Ivor Novello and a BRIT nomination completed the year. Their remix of Jamiroquai’s Canned Heat arrived on King for a Day. Shanks & Bigfoot shied away from live performance, letting the music speak for itself. It still does. Stormzy played Sweet Like Chocolate at Glastonbury 2019, one of only three covers in his headline set. Nathan Dawe and Talia Mar’s Sweet Lies sampled it in 2022. Doolally - Shanks & Bigfoot. Two identities, one story.
