A nostalgic, underground rhythm and blues artist.
SISTER COOKIE makes old sounds for new sins: haunted soul, rhythm & blues and rock’n’roll. Her songs gather under a low blue light, somewhere between the dressing room, the kitchen, the chapel, the boxing ring and the bridge at night. “The most original sound. Like Little Richard, Mark Ronson, Nina Simone and Nick Cave all got locked in a New Orleans speakeasy” - RSD Unsigned 2020 Hers is a world of blue-corner pianos, old wounds, sharp humour, family ghosts, desire, and survival with its lipstick still intact. Drawing from rhythm & blues, gospel, early rock'n'roll, soul and cinematic noir, SISTER COOKIE makes music that looks backwards only to drag the past into the present. Vintage in texture, but not nostalgic; romantic, but not tame; wounded, but never weak. She is currently building her next project, The Disobedient Daughter Who Married a Skull, a body of work shaped by myth, rebellion, ancestral echoes and the strange theatre of becoming. This next chapter also carries a new name: demwe. The transition begins here. Winner of Record Store Day Unsigned 2020, her album In the Blue Corner had a limited-edition release in 2021, with a full release in 2022. "I just love this woman's voice!" - Craig Charles "Wow, I mean what's not to like about that?! That is sensational! How groovy is that?" - Mark Radcliffe “What a voice!” - Robert Elms “Her voice is stunning, powerful and unique, and her stage presence hits the back of the room at any venue she plays” - Deb Grant
