Yuko Araki is one of a number of female artists emerging from Japan who are redefining the boundaries of noise, post-industrial techno and experimental electronics. Raised as a pianist, Araki’s teenage obsession with metal opened a gateway to intense sonics. After exploring projects including KUUNATIC and Concierto de la Familia, she developed her solo approach to freeform analog noise in 2019, releasing her first EP “I” via Indonesian label Gerpfast Kolektif and debut album “II” via Italian label Commando Vanessa. Working with a reductive set of tools, Araki creates dense, complex soundscapes through the interplay of competing elements. Her work balances ferocity with playfulness, resisting mere sonic nihilism. Australian label Room40 released “End of Trilogy” in 2021, followed by “IV” in 2023, which expanded her sound into a more bludgeoning terrain of ritual, noise, subsonics and crushing rhythms. Incorporating otherworldly vocals, “IV” also features Taichi Nagura of Endon. In August 2024, Room40 released “Zenjitsutan -前日譚” (Japanese for “prequel”), the zero entry in Araki’s numbered album series and a declaration of love for long-form noise drone. Araki has performed across Europe, the UK, Asia and Canada at festivals and venues including MUTEK JP, MODE, Skaņu Mežs, Unsafe+Sounds, Freespace Noise Fest, Cafe OTO, IKLECTIK, Cave12 and Soup. She has also collaborated with visual artists Jackson Kaki and Daisy Dickinson on audiovisual performances.
