Rudolf Buchbinder concludes his complete cycle of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos with the towering Fifth, nicknamed “Emperor” for its ambition and grandeur. One of Beethoven’s foremost interpreters, Buchbinder performs the concerto known for its cosmic scale. Conductor Xian Zhang opens the program with Beethoven’s joyous Fourth Symphony, characterized by Robert Schumann as a slender Greek maiden between two giants for its classical structure positioned between the imposing Third and Fifth symphonies.
