raxil4's Stabat Mater
An underground, gritty drone night.
To celebrate 50 years of prolific drone artist raxil4, we shall be presenting the debut of his first experimental operatic work – the Stabat Mater. Based on a 13th century Latin text, The Choir of Babel, a multilingual choir will perform the piece in as many languages as possible at the same time. Set to a drone noise background featuring a large ensemble of some of raxil4’s most frequent collaborators and some of London’s finest improvisers, including members of the Apocalypse Jazz Unit, the London Improvisers Orchestra, and the GPS theremin trio. Combined with visuals by video artist Egle Saka creating a landscape to enhance the atmosphere. The work is split into five pieces, each representing a different stage of grief. The text has been set to music over 300 times. Now, after 20 years in the making, it is raxil4’s turn.
