Origin stories re-enact familiar myths; this one begins with a solo artist in a bedroom attempting to create something entirely unique. Filipino-American artist April Harper Grey, performing as underscores, began her musical journey in middle school by sharing SoundCloud releases and cultivating a dedicated following. Her 2017 EP moved the project beyond its solitary beginnings, and by 2021, her debut album Fishmonger propelled her from recording vocals in a car to supporting 100 gecs on tour. Now signed to Mom+Pop, underscores has amassed over 42 million global streams and released the adventurous concept album Wallsocket. Her work is known for jolting listeners out of their reverie, combining initial absurdity with deeper nuance and emotional weight. She has performed on major stages at festivals including Lollapalooza, Electric Forest, and FVDED in the Park.
