This programme by Les Arts Florissants explores the evolution of the madrigal, culminating in the dramatic masterpiece Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. Inspired by Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered, the work depicts the tragic duel between the knight Tancred and Clorinda. Through innovative musical expression and theatrical power, Monteverdi created a new form of storytelling that paved the way for modern opera and transformed Western musical composition.
