Dans sa fièvre postromantique et sa folle virtuosité, le Concerto n° 2 de Rachmaninoff compose un diptyque avec le symbolisme angoissé de L’Île des morts. En prime, une création du compositeur Thomas Larcher, lui-même pianiste. Créé à Moscou en 1901 par Rachmaninoff lui-même, le Concerto n° 2 fit office pour le jeune compositeur, après l’échec cuisant de sa première Symphonie, de véritable thérapie. On y retrouve le lyrisme irrépressible et la virtuosité transcendante caractéristique de son style.
