il Pomo d’Oro
A nostalgic opera night.
Named for Antonio Cesti’s eponymous opera, the period-instrument and vocal ensemble il Pomo d’Oro brings incendiary energy and electrifying verve to historically informed performances of music from the Baroque and Classical periods. The ensemble often works under the direction of chief conductor Maxim Emelyanychev or leader Zefira Valova to revitalize everything from Handel’s operas to Mozart's symphonies. In this performance, il Pomo d’Oro launches its Residency with music from Claudio Monteverdi’s Selva morale e spirituale. This work serves as a summation of the Italian composer’s tenure as Maestro di Cappella at St Mark’s in Venice, and was first published in the early 1640s.
