Pride in Amsterdam
The programme runs from late July into the first days of August, with the Canal Parade as its central day. Crews prepare their boats for months, the public watches from the banks, the bridges and the windows, and the city stops around the route. Around the parade runs a full week: open-air parties, concerts, talks and events in venues across town, many of them free to enter.
Amsterdam's queer history is not confined to that one week. At the Westermarkt, beside the Westerkerk, stands the Homomonument, among the first memorials in the world dedicated to those persecuted for their sexuality. The Netherlands was the first country in the world to recognise same-sex marriage, in 2001. The nightlife runs year-round, with bars and clubs around Reguliersdwarsstraat and events in venues that change from season to season. The list here shows the city's LGBTQ+ friendly events as a whole, not only those falling inside Pride week. So outside July and August the list does not empty entirely: it thins, and what remains are the city's standing club nights rather than the festival's own programme.
