About Broken Beat
Emerging from the vibrant West London club scene in the late 1990s, broken beat is an eclectic electronic music genre characterized by its distinctive syncopated rhythms and staggered percussion. The genre utilizes a sophisticated blend of 4/4 time signatures with displaced accents, often incorporating analog synthesizers, intricate live percussion, and rich, jazzy chord progressions. Typically operating between 110 and 130 BPM, the style projects a sophisticated yet energetic mood, bridging the gap between underground dance music and soulful experimentation. It acts as a bridge between the complex breakbeats of jungle and the steady pulse of deep house, while maintaining strong semantic ties to neo-soul, funk, and jazz-fusion.
