absolutely one of the best screenings i’ve been too in a hot minute and another q&a that i’ve attended that had some controversy!! basically Andrew Dominik was doing a q&a with an interviewer and then they opened the floor for questions and a few people put their hand up (including me). shit you not literally the first person was this older woman who they passed the mic to and said “i’m Chopper Read’s widowed wife and i’ve been wanting to tell you for 20 years how you distorted his story and the Read family hasn’t seen a single cent of profit.”the crowd went fucking silent. everyone was just genuinely shocked and anticipating what was gonna happen. Dominik clearly has trouble with hearing and needed the interviewer to basically say to him what the woman was saying but he clearly felt awkward to tell him, so there’s this weird and strange vibe happening where no one knew what was happening. the woman keeps talking and saying stuff like “i want a genuine answer from you because you’ve built a reputation and career off a movie that has tarnished my family’s name” and then another man stands up and also starts shouting at Dominik saying similar things like “we haven’t seen a single fucking cent! and we want a fucking answer!”. it didn’t help at all that this guy was holding a jacket with a suspicious object under it and me and my boy dan were looking at each other like “what the fuck is going to happen”. Dominik proceeded to give an incredibly sincere answer and was agreeing with both Chopper’s wife and the man and talked about how Chopper was funded by the government and wholeheartedly agreed that the family should be paid and was having a mature discussion and giving proper answers to both family members. luckily the guy left still angsty but satisfied with the answer. the room was sooooo cleary uncomfortable right after this but Dominik started cracking jokes and was giving great answers and answered my question about the process from the jump to making short films to featured films and said “one thing you’ll learn straight away is that short films are such a breeze to edit, it used to be my favourite part of the process… editing features nearly makes me suicidal, it will beat you down and make you feel like utter shit until you eventually find something good”but yeah end of story, we kinda hanged back for a bit and noticed Chopper’s wife and Dominik speaking and clearly seemed to be having a personal and passionate discussion where they ended with a hug. then me and dan were kinda just awkwardly hanging around and dan got to ask the goat about distributing movies and gave some hilariously real advice and then said to us “i wish you boys luck with your filmmaking” insane night that has definitely given me a new drive for writing which i really needed atmok but also chopper is a genuine all-timer and i can’t believe i’ve been avoiding the most aaron-core movie for years.
Fuck, this was good. Amazing. Eric Bana is crazy-good, phenomenally phenomenal.. Extremely similar to Bronson. Both have thundering performances and both are about infamous, violent criminals spending much of their life behind bars. Very similar in style also.
