Moderately scary mystery horror B-picture set in a remote castle/mansion. An architect and his wife are sent to survey Rochester Castle, which is so remote they have to stay in the creepy place. Then strange, frightening things start to happen...Notable only for an early appearance by a young Richard Kiel as 'The Giant'.Watched on YouTube.
💯🎃👻🦇 One Hundred Horror Movies in October (2022) 🦇👻🎃💯#2The house may be damned, but in this market, who can complain? An architect and his wife (Ron Foster, Merry Anders) are called upon to investigate a spooky abandoned house. They decide to turn this into an impromptu honeymoon; however, upon their arrival, they are greeted by some suspicious strangers and a very cute black cat. If I plan to cram 100 movies in this month, I better make sure some of them are short and sweet. Clocking it at exactly an hour and two minutes, House of the Damned is just that. Directed by AIP lifer Maury Dexter, House of the Damned is a lean, clean little romp that serves as a perfectly adequate appetizer to the haunted holiday season. While an imperfect film in and of itself, you can rest assured that this guest never overstays its welcome.Like its setting, House of the Damned is a bit creaky. Headless women, a moody black cat and a shady businessman lurk in the shadows, while Richard Kiel (Jaws in a few James Bonds) plays a not so jolly grey giant, hiding in closets and grimacing at interlopers like he's Boris Karloff's moody teen son. This all happens in between endless bouts of talking (the cheapest cinematic filler of all-time), leading up a head-scratcher of a finale that, if nothing else, makes a strong argument for squatter's rights. If it sounds like I'm selling this thing short, I'm really not. The most interesting stuff is saved for the final five minutes but you won't feel damned watching the rest of the flick waiting for that to happen.
Decent build up for an old dark house movie. Shadows, creepy things happening, locked rooms, some deformed creature sneaking into the bedroom in the middle of the night. There's even a black (adorable) cat. All sorts of build up, which I was enjoying until I noticed there was only 10 minutes left in the movie. I knew it wasn't going to be a satisfying ending. I mean in some ways it was better than I expected, or at least something different, but it felt a bit of a letdown after all that mysterious set up. So it ended being a fairly average, but enjoyable, old dark house movie, with an interesting but disappointing ending. But there were definitely some moments that stood out.
