黑衣人
A grounded, bleak documentary.
Wang Xilin, 86, is one of China's most important modern classical composers. During the Cultural Revolution he was the target of severe persecution, enduring beatings, imprisonment and torture. With excerpts from his Symphonies, he revisits for this film some of the horrifying events that still live on in his memory as testimony to an era that saw the dehumanization of the entire Chinese nation.

"As an author, I can't give people false hope! Paint a glorious future? I don't see one. Sell people a fairy tale? Never!"An incredible documentary that shows the inner mind of an artist in all of its power and beauty. Having the symphonies playing over Wang Xilin's testimonies about the terror he and his nation have gone through was so powerful. Hearing how he describes and explains something like how torture has given him a certain idea for a certain symphony, while hearing the music and understanding exactly what he talks about, is intensely powerful. Wang Bing's direction gives the story and the music such immeasurable artistic merit that even being filmed in one location with a single person in front of the camera and nothing else, it shows you the wounds of a nation and of an individual and tells a story of resistance through art in all its vividness. Truly a masterful piece of art."A deathly silence. Then the madman's dreary song. How would that sound? A madman has no songs. His mind is gone. He cries and bleeds in silence."
The documentary follows 86-year-old classical composer Wang Xilin as he uses an empty theater, his music, and his scarred body to revisit the severe persecution he endured during China's Cultural Revolution.
Man in Black was directed by acclaimed Chinese documentarian Wang Bing in 2023.
