Affected by the powerful images in the pamphlet Om kriget kommer (If war comes), farmhand Karl-Göran Persson begins fortifying his house. Through years of harvesting scrap-metal, he transforms the house into a fortress, meant to protect him and his neighbors when the enemy attacks. As the task progresses, reality and the threat of future destruction become intertwined, and construction becomes an obsession for the lonely Karl-Göran.

mi casa del minecraft literal
The Belá Tarr version of this is sinisterly waiting in the wings, with all of its subject’s dangerous, tetanus/black lung-inducing labours (melting car tyres in an indoor stove to make tar???) drawn out to excruciating length. As it stands, a rapid 85 minutes tightens the film’s belt significantly, and Denis Lavant’s effortlessly compelling physicality fills every moment with intrigue when all that’s there on paper is bitter irony. I would be interested to see what Swedish people think of his performance, and in particular his voice; I think I was detecting some bonkers vocal work in bridging his French accent with a whole new language. Maybe that’s the point; Persson was a man out of place and stuck in time, a fringe character on the outskirts waiting for the world to end instead of living his life in a fulfilling way. I’d still like that Belá Tarr version, mind.
