backtracked cut their teeth playing tribute shows. Reworking classic hip-hop artists such as Erykah Badu, Missy Elliot and Outkast. Often playing with backing tracks containing acapellas, and putting modern jazz grooves underneath it, they created a feel good spectacle that was ridiculous, mitigated by being semi-impressive. Them showing up to gigs with backing tracks, in combination with vowing gig after gig, never to play a tribute show again, loosely explains the name. Backtracked are based in Berlin, write and perform their own music - and still play some of their weirdest tribute tunes. Drawing from the classic style from Missy, Outkast, Erykah and so, but influenced from newer artists, such as Kiefer, Big Yuki, Butcher Brown, the UK Jazz scene (Joe-Armon Jones), and the burgeoning Berlin scene (Yoofee, move 78, Abase, Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange) The music is light hearted, skateboard-in-the-sunshine-on-loads-of-Berlin-concrete, with accessible melodies and heavy grooves.
