Taking their name from the classic British murder ballad Polly Vaughn, Steve Koch and Colleen Hodgson formed He Mistook Her For A Swan in 2018 and they have been delighting and terrifying audiences with dark folk songs of love, loss and mayhem ever since. Their eponymous debut acoustic album mastered by Grammy award winner Peter J Moore was released in 2020 with a selection of dark tales taken mostly from traditional folk music. Originally inspired by British and American folk artists such as Bert Jansch, Jackson C Frank, Anne Briggs and Townes Van Zandt, their sound retains a solid traditional basis but taking their cue from newer folk artists such as Lankum, they are moving into darker and more complex sonic worlds with their new album Lady Isobel which will be released on Friday the 13th of December 2024. Their latest release Lady Isobel includes both centuries old traditional ballads such as 'Lady Isobel' and 'The Devil's Nine Questions' as well as covers of songs by Bert Jansch, Hoyt Axton and Townes Van Zandt. Make no mistake though, this is not your grandmother’s folk music. Colleen Hodgson's beautiful singing is a golden thread weaving the diverse musical styles on Lady Isobel together while Steve’s guitar and singing adds a darker counterpoint. A team of incredibly talented veterans came together to help Steve and Colleen create the new album adding a new level of maturity and depth to the album.
