Colin Currie Group: Steve Reich Celebration
An underground minimalism night.
Be in the room for the first London performance of In All Your Ways, a new work by Steve Reich, as the Colin Currie Group begins a year-long celebration of his 90th birthday. Steve Reich’s impact on generations of performers, composers and listeners over his six-decade career has been immense. His distinctive soundworld of looping, shifting, interlocking patterns is instantly recognisable, and the experience of hearing his music live is akin to meditation. Reich’s 1972 classic Clapping Music opens a varied programme of works from the last 20 years. Radio Rewrite takes two Radiohead songs as its springboard, while in Double Sextet, each instrument interacts with its twin. Percussionist Colin Currie, a lifelong champion of Reich’s work, is the dedicatee of Quartet, scored for the quintessential Reich combination of two vibraphones and two pianos. These works pave the way for a new commission fresh from its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival.
