Musick for the Entertainment of the King
A nostalgic, underground classical night.
An evening of lavish music from the court of Charles II: at its heart is a full staging of the earliest surviving complete opera in the English language – John Blow's magnificent Venus and Adonis, a work both witty and tragic, with remarkable choruses. This is preceded by the first ode for Charles II written by Henry Purcell: Welcome, Vicegerent of the Mighty King. This performance will be St Marylebone Festival's second full staging of an opera, following Jonathan Dove's Mansfield Park in 2024, a performance which received 5-star reviews in the national press.
