Sammy Baloji: Le Père Sauvage
An underground maloya night.
Congolese artist Sammy Baloji curates an immersive evening of sound and visuals, bringing together three diverse artists to explore memory and colonial legacies. The performance features new music inspired by 1970s Pan-Africanism and Joseph Conrad’s novel, Heart of Darkness, reimagining the traditional concert experience through shifting spatial perspectives. The programme includes a composition for trumpet, cello, and piano by Szymon Brzóska, an ensemble work by Pytshens Kambilo rooted in Congolese rumba and urban liberation, and a sound cartography by Satch Hoyt. Performing from the Hall’s balcony, Hoyt blends synthesized sounds with antique African instruments to trace the historical journeys of Black people across the Atlantic.
