Sir Antonio Pappano continues his Vaughan Williams cycle, exploring two contrasting sides of the great 20th-century English composer alongside Beethoven’s majestic Third Piano Concerto. The programme features Vaughan Williams’ expressive A Pastoral Symphony, an anguished response to World War I, and his more rhythmic Symphony No 8 from the dawn of the new Elizabethan age. Bruce Liu, winner of the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition, joins for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 3, a work of Mozartian elegance and profound beauty.
