Apollo’s Fire: Echoes Across the Atlantic
A nostalgic, slow-burn baroque night.
Grammy-winning ensemble Apollo's Fire and conductor Jeannette Sorrell join soprano Jeanine De Bique to explore the historic connections between Europe and the 18th-century Caribbean. This performance traces stories of love, despair, and resilience through musical masterworks and Caribbean funeral orations. The programme features a suite from Handel's Agrippina, orchestral works by Rameau including his aria from Platée, and the music of Purcell and Vivaldi. These classical compositions are interspersed with the voices of Caribbean poets, creating a dialogue between Baroque palace music and the plantation culture of the colonies in a celebration of shared humanity.
