La Fontaine d’Israël is a rarity from the repertoires that Les Arts Florissants and Paul Agnew specialize in. This collection of spiritual motets, published in 1623, highlights the influence of Italian style in Lutheran Germany during the early 17th century. A contemporary of Schütz, Johann Hermann Schein was an illustrious predecessor of Bach at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. As both a composer and poet, he was among the first Germans to adopt the lyricism and expressive traits of the Italian madrigal. These twenty-six motets for five voices and continuo are set primarily to Old Testament texts translated by Martin Luther, showcasing a musical blend that Paul Agnew and Les Arts Florissants bring to life as experts in the transition between the Renaissance and Baroque eras.
