A nostalgic jazz night.
Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s near-40-year collaboration is one of the most consequential in the history of jazz music. Their 1960 Nutcracker Suite album marked the first time Strayhorn appeared on an Ellington album cover, highlighting his role as the project's primary architect. Ellington and Strayhorn adapted Tchaikovsky’s themes into a swing style, featuring everything from full-band performances to sparse, mysterious arrangements. This evening’s performance by Giacomo Smith's Big Band presents this master work alongside Smith’s original compositions and other rarities from the big band canon.
