Jlin + Third Coast Percussion: Vernacular

The award-winning percussion ensemble and the Pulitzer Prize finalist composer and electronic musician come together in a performance that explores the evolution of their decade-long partnership. Performing electronic renditions of Jlin’s compositions alongside acoustic realizations of Third Coast Percussion’s pieces, the program also features a brand-new work commissioned by 92Y. The piece brings all five musicians together live, conjuring an entirely new sonic universe. Jlin’s signature sound is shaped by her roots in the Chicago Footwork scene. Her complex, percussion-driven work is marked by a sophisticated and distinctly polyrhythmic style. Her collaborations with Third Coast Percussion represent an early and pivotal step into composing for acoustic ensembles, while the group’s commandingly elegant and inventive performances both inspire and engage in dialogue with Jlin’s genre-defying compositions.
