Part of the LA Phil’s Rituals festival curated by Esa-Pekka Salonen, this program pairs two powerful requiems that explore questions of faith and mortality. Mozart’s Requiem stands as a sacred rite suspended between fear and hope. Left unfinished at the time of his death, the work remains a heart-wrenching statement on salvation, featuring the iconic Dies irae and Lacrimosa. György Ligeti’s Requiem offers a stark contrast, described by the composer as hysterical and unrestrained. Its unsettling textures and sounds of cosmic dread gained fame through Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. This performance captures the physical evocation of cold sweat and the shadow of death that permeate the score.
