Sound profile
A danceable, high-energy sound.
Emerging from African American communities in the mid-1960s, funk de-emphasized melody and chord progressions in favor of a strong, syncopated rhythmic groove centered on the electric bass and drums. The genre is characterized by the "on the one" rhythmic emphasis, featuring interlocking patterns of scratchy electric guitars, punchy horn sections, and percussive keyboards like the Clavinet or Hammond organ. Funk’s earthy and celebratory mood bridges the gap between the emotive soul of the early sixties and the dance-centric evolution of disco, while its heavy use of syncopation provided the foundational breakbeats for hip-hop culture.
