Such a rarely seen coming of age film, a young child realises she can't be the centre of the universe for the adult she loves conditionally, the only one she shares all her memories with, one who has a whole life outside of her.Ama Gloria is never a film concerned with saying something too big, that's beyond the scope of its small protagonist, who sees more but understands little, as every child on the edge of independence does. The close framing of her knowing face buoys the film in her point of view, even when we as adults see her childishness, it never feels petulant. It also becomes a carefully done mediation of colonialism in that clever, unsaid way. Our lead is not at fault, but she is part of that system that forces mothers to leave their actual children to nanny others. She is an interloper, but her treatment in Cape Verde is not dramatic, it is real and earned, it is difficult but not melodramatic. And my god does that little actress break your heart.
Note to myself : grief is not always about death. Best line : « Weird because all my memories are filled with you ».
