Hud Bannon is a ruthless young man who tarnishes everything and everyone he touches. Hud represents the perfect embodiment of alienated youth, out for kicks with no regard for the consequences. There is bitter conflict between the callous Hud and his stern and highly principled father, Homer. Hud's nephew Lon admires Hud's cheating ways, though he soon becomes too aware of Hud's reckless amorality to bear him anymore. In the world of the takers and the taken, Hud is a winner. He's a cheat, but, he explains, "I always say the law was meant to be interpreted in a lenient manner."

My first paul newman movie on the big screen since Cars..Extremely clever, stylish, and bleak, everything i want out of a revisionist western. A stretch, but the closest i’ve seen an American film replicate Ozu’s simple profundity through an ensemble. Texas Story? Been on a slop streak recently so this felt good on the soul
If you're a young Paul Newman, with all the world-beating beauty and charisma that goes along with it, you have to fight hard against an audience's natural sympathies to be an antihero. And as Hud, Newman fights hard indeed. You keep searching for redeemable aspects to this character-- and every so often, you get one-- but mostly he's selfish, unscrupulous and violent, and manages to alienate everyone who cares about him. Love the look of this film, too. James Wong Howe deserved his Oscar.
Insanely bleak, world-weary neo-western about the passing of an infected torch from the principled ranchers who in their old age have grown as hard as the land they work and the cold-blooded youth they've helped shape that believe in nothing but individual impulse and profit. Some of the most beautiful B&W cinemascope of the 60s in service of some truly stomach-churning, feel-bad character drama. A movie that makes you feel like one of those executed cows in that muddy pit. Was not surprised to learn that this was originally a novel by the the Last Picture Show guy. "It don't take long to kill things. Not like it takes to grow."
