A non-musical telling of the story of La Bohème in which Gertrude Lawrence flutters as Mimi and Douglas Fairbanks Jr smoulders as Rodolfo. I say non-musical but actually a few anachronistic numbers are tossed Gertie's way. It looks good and has a huge costumed ball as its highlight but it's stiff and unwelcoming and will only make you cry if you're peeling onions at the time.
My primary reason for watching this was to see Gertrude Lawrence in a film which I've not done before. Sadly, she didn't make very many. And she was good in this. Very much like Julie Andrews. The film started off really well. I liked the collection of characters and the look of the film. But the film soon started to drag. Douglas Fairbanks Jr lacked charm and the film just plodded along. But it did pick up at the end so I left happy enough with it.
