Susan Seidelman's Smithereens feels cut from a similar cloth as Barbara Loden's Wanda, but smeared in that unmistakable scuzz of New York City. while Loden's Wanda is soft-spoken and diaphanous, Seidelman's Wren is spunky, venomous, and brusque –– getting in physical fights, carelessly lying as she plods through the city in her crimson high-tops, and mistreating the one guy who's nice to her. "from now on, this van is always gonna remind you of me," she spits at him. Smithereens is about pathetic glamor; about ego so blinding that you miss the good that's right in front of you; about being so relentlessly pro-Hollywood that you make a case for anti-Hollywood; about how bleeding on the street in the dead of night both is and isn't as romantic as you think. i can't recommend it enough, especially for my fellow girls who rock!!
