"Halt's Maul, jetzt red' i!"According to a book I read Der Rebell was a film Adolf Hitler liked a lot. It's pretty easy to see why: The protagonist comes back to an Austrian town taken over by the French and unites the German people to fight the foreigners. Included are heroic deaths for the fatherland.For the most part Der Rebell is a pretty mediocre film with some disjointed scenes and rather bad acting. However there is one lenghty chase sequence where they take it up the actual Alps, above the clouds in the snow, and that's pretty damn impressive. They also cause some real avalanches in the film for some action scenes with dummies.Most of the script comes off more corny than anything else. Luise Ullrich is pretty charming though.

Luis Trenker in one of his mountain films. The German language version of The Rebel. And it's great the two times he's chased up the mountains. Also when they fight back for the grand climax. But a lot of the other stuff felt unfocused. Never bad. Just struggling to find the same thread as when the focus is on the nature and Trenker conquering it.

"Der Rebell" spielt während des Tiroler Aufstands, der von Andreas Hofer gegen Napoleons Frankreich und dem mit ihm verbündeten Bayern geführt wurde, beschränkt sich jedoch auf kleineren Raum und stellt eine ahistorische Figur, gespielt von Luis Trenker, in den Vordergrund. Trenker führte auch Co-Regie an der Seite Curtis Bernhardts (damals noch ein Kurt), die im Bergfilmvergleich erneut wesentlich gröber ausfällt, als bei Arnold Fanck. Die patriotische Aussage eines durch die Sprache geeinten Deutschlands, das sich nicht wie 1809 bekriegt, gefiel 2 Monate nach dem Kinostart Goebbels so gut, dass er ihn als einen von 4 Filmen ("Anna Karenina", Goulding 1927, "Panzerkreuzer Potemkin", Eisenstein 1925 und "Die Nibelungen", Lang 1924) als vorbildhaft für den zukünftigen nationalsozialistischen Film betrachtete. Historische Stoffe also mit oft patriotischen Inhalten, dargebracht mit suggestiver Propagandawirkung wie im Falle Eisensteins. Vom späteren nationalsozialistischen Historienfilm um Führerprinzip und Imperialismus ist "Der Rebell" so weit entfernt wie der in der Aussage ähnliche "Braveheart" (Gibson 1995), jedoch markiert der Film in seiner politischen Wirkung eine wichtige Weichenstellung in der NS-Filmpolitik.
