Classic Hong scenario: you meet your girlfriend's family, things seem to go relatively well, then you sit at the table, start to drink, and embarrassment ensues. Of course, things haven't gone that well; the casualness of the filmmaking and the light comic tone play against an inherent violent tension that is generational and class-oriented. After the relatively elaborate By the Stream, this is Hong back into his more offhand late mode, and the writing is among his most straightforward. It does arrive at a powerful place; most late Hong are about reaching those moments of departure. The big table scene is wonderful, and the main character is among his more intriguing figures in his mix of silliness and feeling.
Leave it to Uncle Hong to deliver a film that looks like it was shot on a Sony Ericsson phone and still murder the Berlinale competition. He‘s just flexing at this point.
