Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, two monumental works of classical music, are honored in this performance. The Czech Symphony Orchestra Prague performs annually at the start of the year alongside the Coro di Praga and three vocal soloists at Berlin's Philharmonie. Carmina Burana, described by Orff as secular songs for soloists and choir accompanied by instruments and magical images, is powerfully brought to life. The Coro di Praga frames the performance with the powerful homage to the goddess Fortuna. This is paired with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, featuring the iconic 'Ode to Joy' by Friedrich Schiller. Despite his total deafness, Beethoven spent over half a decade on this masterpiece, creating a triumphant work that continues to radiate joy and move audiences in Berlin's largest concert halls.
