Rossini’s ‘Stabat mater’
A raw opera night.
Ancient musical models inspired Rossini’s operatic Stabat mater, a powerful spiritual statement from the master of secular drama. The program also features Respighi’s 1927 Church Windows, which receives its Proms debut. These four richly scored orchestral movements utilize Gregorian chant fragments to depict vivid scenes, including a shimmering nocturne and a luminous portrait of St. Clare, performed by Nil Venditti and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
