Madrid's Orgullo is among the largest in Europe: the parade draws more than two million people, and the whole Chueca neighbourhood becomes its centre.
LGBTQ+ Friendly🌈 · Madrid
The programme runs from late June into early July, with the main parade as its peak. Chueca is not simply where it happens: it is where it began. In 1986 a seminar on homosexuality organised in the neighbourhood led to the founding of COGAM, Madrid's lesbian, gay, transsexual and bisexual group. In 2005, with the approval of equal marriage in Spain, attendance exploded and reached two million for the first time.
Through the week the squares of Chueca turn into open-air stages, with concerts and DJ sets running late, and the programme spreads into other central neighbourhoods as well. Many of the events are free to enter, and the city closes streets around the parade route. Outside the Orgullo period, Madrid's queer scene runs year-round in the bars and clubs of Chueca and around it. The list here shows the city's LGBTQ+ friendly events as a whole, not only those falling inside the festival week. Outside late June and early July the list thins to the clubs' own standing nights, which run through the rest of the year in and around the neighbourhood.
