Greece holds four Prides a year - in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras and Heraklion - and Thessaloniki is second in size. The event combines a march and a festival in the centre of the city, with speeches and political demands from the stage and concerts running late. Around the central day comes a programme of screenings, talks and exhibitions, along with parties in venues across town.
Thessaloniki has a queer scene that runs year-round and is not confined to Pride week: bars and clubs in the centre, around Valaoritou and Ladadika, and events in venues that change from season to season. The city's student population gives the scene its own rhythm, with nights that fill from October through May and thin out in summer, when the city empties. The list here shows the city's LGBTQ+ friendly events as a whole - parties, concerts and club nights - not only those falling inside the days of the festival itself. The march itself crosses the centre, near the waterfront and the city's main pedestrian streets, so it is visible to people who did not come for it - which for a city of Thessaloniki's size counts for as much as the headcount does.
