When Hamburg held its first CSD, in 1980, Paragraph 175 was still law - and it was what the march was aimed at.
LGBTQ+ Friendly🌈 · Hamburg
On 28 June 1980 gay, bisexual and trans people took to the streets of the Hanseatic city on a large scale for the first time. The first CSD was organised by the Homosexuellen Aktion Hamburg, and around 1,500 people demonstrated against Paragraph 175 - the section of the criminal code that still criminalised sex between men - and for better living conditions for gay people. The paragraph was only finally repealed in 1994, fourteen years later.
Today Hamburg's CSD is among the largest in Germany, with a full Pride Week around the summer march, speeches, parties and events across the city. St. Georg, the quarter beside the central station around the Lange Reihe, is the historic heart of queer life, with bars and cafés that have been there for decades. Like Berlin, Hamburg keeps the name Christopher Street Day, after the New York street where it all began. The second pole is St. Pauli around the Reeperbahn, the port's nightlife strip, where clubs and parties run until morning all year. Between settled, easygoing St. Georg and loud St. Pauli, the city has two very different queer nights. The list here shows LGBTQ+ friendly events as a whole and not only the days of the march.
