Evia is a large island with a mainland character, and its calendar spreads accordingly: from Chalkida and the southern villages up to the highlands of northern Evia, with two feasts standing above all the rest.
Nothing on right now
May - September
Panigiria run from May to September, and the season peaks at Dekapentavgoustos - the Dormition, on 15 August - when most villages hold their feast. Each programme is set close to its own saint's day, so the list fills late and empties out of season.
The first is Agia Paraskevi, patron of Chalkida, on July 26. The city celebrates around her church, while at Kallithea the traditional feast is set up from the eve, on July 25. The second falls earlier, on May 27, and is held not in Chalkida but at Prokopi in northern Evia: the feast of Agios Ioannis o Rossos draws thousands of pilgrims from across Greece and is accompanied by a large panigiri with the traditional music and dances of northern Evia. The village was built by refugees from Cappadocia, who brought the saint's relics with them, and the feast keeps that memory alive.
The rest of the year belongs to the villages. At Kymi and elsewhere the Virgin is traditionally celebrated on August 15, while Nerotrivia holds a three-day panigiri on August 29, with the dancing in the village square. At Steni and in the Dirfys highlands the feasts keep the rhythm of the mountain. In Chalkida itself, Koulouma on Clean Monday is traditionally kept at the Karababa fortress at Kanithos and in the city's squares - the one day of the year the celebration comes down from the villages into the town.
In Chalkida for Agia Paraskevi on July 26, at Kallithea from the eve, at Prokopi in northern Evia on May 27, at Kymi around August 15 and at Nerotrivia on August 29. See the current calendar on Mood.
