Syros celebrates on two calendars at once, Orthodox and Catholic. It is the only Greek island where the two communities have coexisted at this scale for centuries, and the result is a summer holding more feast days than a single calendar could carry.
Panigiria · Syros
May - September
Panigiria run from May to September, and the season peaks at Dekapentavgoustos - the Dormition, on 15 August - when most villages hold their feast. Each programme is set close to its own saint's day, so the list fills late and empties out of season.
Ano Syros, the medieval settlement climbing in steps above Ermoupoli, is the heart of the island's Catholic community: the cathedral of Agios Georgios at its summit celebrates on April 23 and opens the year's run of feasts. Markos Vamvakaris, the patriarch of rembetiko, was born in those same lanes in 1905, and Ano Syros still carries a double musical identity - rembetiko on one side, island song on the other. The southern villages - Chroussa, Poseidonia (still called Delagratsia), Foinikas and Vari - hold theirs in squares and church courtyards, while the island's largest gathering remains August 15.
The feasts here are open-air and free: tables go up in the square, the band plays from evening until morning, and people step in and out of the dancing circle as they please. The line-up is Cycladic with a wide repertoire - violin and laouto at the core, santouri for colour, tsambouna for the older tunes, and bouzouki or guitar when the night turns towards laiko. On the table are local cheeses such as San Michali and kopanisti, Syros sausage, wine and raki. Ermoupoli itself, built by refugees from Chios and Psara in the 19th century, keeps its formal face of neoclassical mansions and the Apollon theatre - but the dancing goes up to the villages.
In Ano Syros, which also keeps the Catholic calendar, and in the island's villages - Chroussa, Poseidonia, Foinikas, Vari, Kini, Galissas and Manna. Most are held in squares and church courtyards with free entry. See the current calendar on Mood.
Syros has the largest Catholic community of any Greek island, rooted in the Venetian period and centred on Ano Syros. The two communities have coexisted for centuries and keep parallel calendars, so the summer carries twice the feast days - the largest being Agios Georgios on April 23 in Ano Syros.
